How would you define sex?
In a BBC News article a few days ago, we are talking about defining sex and gender, taking a cue from the recent South African story of the athlete considered hermaphroditic .

Have followed the story on television controversial Caster Semenya, whose gender tests showed both male and female characteristics. We're talking about a situation of intersex, an umbrella term that encompasses differences in reproductive and sexual development. In practice, a person may have intersex anatomy and physiological characteristics of both male and female.
How do you define sex?
We can say that there are (at least) 4 types of sex: your phenotype , which leads to the appearance (the one that seems in short), your psychological sex, you feel that to which they belong.
Let's see in detail.
The sex chromosome
Each of us inherits half its genes from mom and half their genes from dad (or donor in the case of same-sex couples).
Among these are the chromosomes that determine sex sessuli of belonging and are X and Y. Those who have XY chromosomes is genetically a male, who has XX chromosomes is genetically a female.
The biological sex
The presence of XX or XY chromosomes determine the physical aspect that we have. So for example, the presence of a penis or a vagina, ovaries or testes and of course to all aspects of secondary sexual (beard, developed breasts, menstruation, nocturnal emissions, etc.).
Sometimes the sex chromosomes and the biological sex do not match and then there are rare situations, but possible intersex (eg pseudohermaphroditism).
The psychological sex
And 'that to which you feel you belong. You can also have sex chromosomes XY male biological sex (in the sense that you have testicles, penis, hair, beard, Adam's apple, etc.), but inside you feel that you are a woman.
And 'this is the case of transsexuals which we have already mentioned something in this post .
Social Sex
And 'what you "feel" socially and that conforms to what you would expect from people who have your sex chromosome and biological.
Too complicated? We try to clarify.
Let's say you have XX chromosomes and then genetically you are a female. You also have a vagina and ovaries and your physical appearance is compatible with a female, that is, it seems (and you) a female.
Besides, you feel you belong to the female sex, then you feel female (well I should say a woman!)
What is left out? What society expects you to behave like a girl, then most likely be using a dress to your genre, do you wear makeup, you will be considered more sensitive than men, more inclined to take care of other people, you really want to have children and they do, choose a job "feminine", runs a home and do the housework and all the other stereotypes that you may choose to include in this list ![]()
There is talk of gender role, that is all that falls in the typical behavior of a person who belongs to that genre. Then you do not want to belong and feel appropriate to the role that gender is a socially prompted another matter. Thankfully! ![]()
